In order to keep your pet from becoming anxious or having problems while in his pet travel carrier, it would be a wise move to make it as comfortable as possible. It should be durable and have smooth edges. This will prevent possible injuries. It is also best if the carrier has opaque sides with ventilation holes and a grille door. Not only will this give your pet plenty of air and a possible view, it also prevents him from being able to see everything that passes by and becoming agitated.

The travel carrier should also have enough room for the animal to either sit or lie down but not so big that he can be thrown around inside it. By adding a towel or something else similar to the interior, you can make the carrier more comfortable for travel. If the travel is by plane, be sure that the carrier also has food and water dishes.
A few months or weeks before your trip, you can begin to help your pet become comfortable with his carrier by first allowing him to explore it and then confining him inside it for short periods of time. By placing his food dishes inside the crate with him, your pet will feel much more at home even in the beginning.

To prepare your pet for the movement involved in travel, take short drives near your home. In case their stomach becomes upset, you may want to keep them from eating too large of a meal before the journey and then take along ice cubes for them. Many pets, including dogs and cats, will quickly become used to and even enjoy traveling.
