The next step in packing your bag is deciding what you’re going to put in it. In order to effectively pack a bag, you’ll need to start by making a travel checklist. This will help prevent you from simply packing everything that pops into your mind at the last minute; rather, you can plan based on your expectations for the trip. Also, consider these questions when deciding what to take and what to leave.
• Who are you packing for?
This may seem obvious, but packing for a toddler is entirely different than packing for an adult. So, if you’re filling a bag with stuff for your baby, seriously consider extra clothing, since they may go through several sets a day. Your spouse will not need that many outfits.
• Where are you going?
It may be your natural tendency to always take an extra items “just in case.” However, consider seriously where you are going, what the weather will be like there, etc. Yes – you would be very prepared by having a jacket in Africa; but is it worth the space that it will take up?
• Why are you going?
If you are going to California for a business trip and will be in meetings most of the day, avoid the urge to fill up your space with swimming gear and shorts. A single pair to be prepared is ok, but don’t waste space.
• How long will you be there?
Will you be staying somewhere for less than a week? If so, plan accordingly, and wear any articles that you can a few times. If you’re going somewhere for longer than a week, find out if you will have laundry services available to you. If so, it would be to your benefit to pack fewer items and simply plan on washing them.
