A magnetic stripe reader is a device that reads the information encoded in the magstripe of a magnetic stripe card. It reads the information with a computer program through a serial port, a USB connection, or a keyboard wedge. Readers are generally characterized by the way that they read a badge. For example, swipe readers require that the card pass completely through the reader, while insertion readers require that the card be put in and then pulled back out.
