Horse blankets are designed for the same purpose as any other blanket: they keep things warm. In this case, it’s the horse that they protect from the cold weather. Like other blankets, they come in many different styles; you can purchase them in different kinds of material and with a variety of benefits. Some of the options you have in styles of horse covers are:

• Stable blankets. These are thick, possibly quilted and lined with wool. They are designed for use in the barn and will keep the horse very warm.
• Turn-out blankets. These are made for the horses that will be spending a lot of time outdoors. Designed with straps, they stay on the horse even while he’s playing. Some of these are lined with an outer layer of canvas that protects the horse in bad weather.
• Exercise rug. Worn under the saddle while exercising, these work like other blankets to hold in the horse’s warmth and protect him from some adverse weather.
• Coolers. These kinds of covers are made of a material such as wool which will allow the horse to cool down after a run but then will alternately work to keep him warm.
• Sheets. There are many kinds of horse sheets. Some of the main ones are anti-sweat sheets which help cool a horse, rain sheets which are waterproof, fly sheets which keep biting flies away from the horse’s flank, and lightweight sheets which provide some warmth for the animal – though not as much as a full-fledged blanket would.
