How is the inner framework made?

Home » Homebuilding » Framing » How is the inner framework made?

An wooden inner framework is found in pretty much every house. This framework includes parts that support the house and parts that do not support anything at all. The inner framework also supports wall coverings (such as drywall), windows and doors. The inner framework also provides places for electrical wiring, heating ductwork, plumbing, insulation and whatever else you need to hide.

Most inner frameworks are made with two foot by four foot wall studs, however 2" x 6" studs are recommended for a stronger frame and larger cavities. In some cases exterior walls are framed with two by sixes and the majority of the inner walls are framed with two by fours.

Not all houses are framed with wooden wall studs. Some newer homes are built with metal studs, a practice adopted from commercial construction methods.
