Don't DIY?

The sub-title of this seemingly DIY home-theater article crack me up: "Local installer: It's good to hire professionals."

Terry Paullin, 61, has been selling and installing home theater systems in Livermore for more than a decade and there is one thing that drives him crazy.

"I hate to see people pay too much," said Paullin, a longtime Silicon Valley executive who now installs between 40 and 50 home theaters every year.

Paullin, who runs Front Row Cinema out of his Livermore home, also writes about the industry for a number of magazines and he had a few tips for residents interested in creating a movie theater-like atmosphere in their home.

"It is a rapidly changing landscape," Paullin said. "It's not brain surgery but it is just complicated enough where people need professional help."

There's certainly a lot one needs to know before installing a good system, but I wouldn't sell yourself short and hire a professional installer from the get-go. Unless, that is, you just want a home theater and aren't what I would call an actual connoisseur.
