A gun safe is designed specifically to store and secure firearms. These safes have steel walls and doors (the thicker the steel, the more secure the guns) and come in all shapes and sizes. Small gun safes hold small guns, such as pistols, and may have adjustable or removable shelves to provide easy storage. Large safes, on the other hand, have spots for small firearms but also have rests into which you can place your long rifles and shotguns as well.

The most important part of a gun safe, however, is the lock. You can purchase a gun safe with many different kinds of locks, including combination, key, electronic, or digital. Some gun safes even feature steel barriers in front of the lock and/or a recessed door, both of which offer added security.

Many gun safes not only lock your guns, but they also protect them from fire damage. Fire-resistant safes are made of hollow sheet metal that surrounds fire-resistant insulation. Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL) tests these safes and verifies how long they will maintain a particular internal temperature.

Whether or not they are fire-resistant, however, gun safes offer the most security possible for your firearms, and in protecting your guns, you are protecting your family. If your guns are protected, curious children will not find them and thieves will never turn a burglary into something much worse.
