Cabinets:
There are two basic cabinet styles: European-style which is frameless and face-framed cabinets. Both styles can be ordered from stock supplies or from custom or semi-custom cabinet-makers. Both styles have an assortment of door, wood and finish options. Quality can vary in cabinet construction so be sure to look for details that may be important to you like roll-out and tilt-out drawer features.
Countertops:
Countertop choices vary from solid surface or granite to the ceramic tile and laminates. Marble and granite tops are not usually materials that a do-it-yourselfer is able to install. But tile and laminate tops that are definitely within reach of a do-it-yourselfer.
Flooring:
Sheet vinyl has been the leading flooring choice for moderately-priced kitchens. It comes in a variety of textures, designs, price ranges and has nearly replaced linoleum that was popular in the past. Ceramic tile and wood floors are gaining popularity in both moderate and high end kitchens.
Sinks:
Kitchen sinks are available in several materials such as cast iron, stainless steel and plastic. They can be mounted in either top-mount or undermount with a combination of sizes and features like single-bowl, double-bowl, deep or shallow. You have several finishes to choose from when selecting faucets: polished brass or nickel, brushed nickel, chrome, stainless steel. Pull-out sprayers, single-levers and double-handled options are also available.
Appliances:
The decision that most certainly will affect the overall design is whether you choose built-in or free-standing appliances. You have a choice of side-by-side refrigerators or units with top or bottom mounted freezers. In addition to the basic gas or electric range you also have the option of halogen or smooth cook tops, double and/or convection ovens, trash compactors, microwaves, range hoods and down-draft vents.
