Preparing the Walls

Taking time to prepare your walls before hanging the paper makes the entire process much easier and more professional looking. Prepare the wall with a vinyl-acrylic sizing to assure the paper sticks to the walls and helps with removing the paper at a later date. Be sure the walls are clean and clear of any debris. If this is a new home or you are papering over painted walls you will need to prime the walls before applying the paper.

It is recommended that you remove any old wallpaper from the walls but you can hang wallpaper directly over old wallpaper. You will have to first prime the wall and should test a small area to see if bubbling occurs. If so, you should remove the old paper.

Make certain there are no holes, cracks, mildew, or peeling paint on the walls. Apply a patching compound to holes and cracks and use a scraper to remove any peeling paint. Remove any mildew with a mixture of equal parts household bleach and water.
