There are four basic types of storage. You are probably utilizing all or some of them right now, but everyone can benefit from additional storage options. Combining these four types of storage will provide both flexibility and function as you organize your home.

OPEN STORAGE includes any place where the items are visible, for example open shelves, hall trees, wall hooks glass top tables, glass front cabinets, etc.
Open storage can look messy unless it is arranged in a neat or decorative fashion. The best uses for open storage are rows of books, framed photos, collection displays or objects of art such as statues, etc. With open storage it is important to put unsightly things inside closed containers. There are many reasonably price decorative boxes and baskets available in market place that will be functional and be much less distracting than miscellaneous “stuff” stacked all over the storage unit.

CLOSED STORAGE is any type of furniture, closet, cabinet or other place where items can be placed and unseen. Closed storage is ideal for those items that can clutter up your home. Smaller pieces and items can be kept neat by storing them in bins or baskets and then placing them in the closed storage unit for easy accessibility.

CONVENIENT STORAGE refers to storage located within a room or area of your home as in a piece of furniture or closet. Any storage place that makes access of items in close proximity to where they are needed is convenient storage. Each storage spot can be set up based on usage of the items stored there. Upper drawers are more convenient and should hold items used more often. Under the bed storage or upper shelves in the closet can be more difficult to access and should be used for items needed less frequently.

REMOTE STORAGE is the place or places in your home that are away from the living area, for example it can be a basement room or closet, attic or garage. The items stored in these areas are used infrequently and may only be needed a couple of times a year. They are more difficult to access and are usually out of sight. Remote storage is for your holiday decorations, memorabilia, seasonal clothing, etc.
