Walkers are an excellent device that can be of great use for individuals that have difficulty walking on their own, elderly persons, or those that have disabilities that limit their mobility. Walkers provide more stability than crutches or canes and allow the user to walk and move about as they please. The handles, that are similar to the handlebars on a bike, are grasped by the user. The user then walks, as he or she feels comfortable, and the walker provides the support and balance needed. A standard walker that does not contain wheels is then picked up and then placed back down on the floor with each step of the user. If wheels are present, the walker simply rolls along the floor as the user moves. Walkers can give many individuals comfort and confidence to move from place to place without the assistance of another individual. Walkers are found in a variety of forms that are constructed to meet each individual’s needs and desires. They vary from a standard model that consists of metal frames and rubber feet, to a more complex unit that contains wheels and brakes. They are available in different colors, weights, styles, and sizes which allow the consumer the opportunity to find one that feels most comfortable. Walkers are able to give a certain amount of freedom to those that would typically not be able to move about on their own.
