There are many types of furnace filters, and they vary in effectiveness, cost, and requirement for cleaning. The furnace filter that will best fit you can be decided based on the needs of your home. Here are the main styles of filters and a little bit about them:

·        Fiberglass Filters. These are disposable and are the least expensive of furnace filters. They are also the least effective in blocking dust and dirt particles, since they only catch the larger ones – leaving pollen and other small particles to pass right through the filter. These furnace filters should be changed approximately every month.
·        Electrostatic Filters. These filters have a static charge that attracts and traps dust and other particles. They are washable and block about 15 to 20 percent more particles than the fiberglass models. Most should be washed every one to three months, depending on how much dirt and dust is in the home.
·        Pleated filters. These filters, known for helping with allergies, use a very dense mesh substance that catches dust, dirt, pollen, mold and many other allergens. And for the effective job they do helping with allergies, they are fairly inexpensive. They last up to three months.
·        HEPA filters. These are the best at cleaning air; however, they also block air flow and so are not recommend for residential use. They are primarily found in hospitals and other commercial places.

If your family does not have a problem with allergies or respiratory problems, disposable or washable filters will probably be fine for your furnace. The most important step in keeping the furnace working properly and the particles in your house at low levels is to remember to clean or replace the filter regularly.
