Furnace filters not only help lower the amount of dust and dirt in the home, but they also help maintain the furnace and central air conditioning. If the filter is clean, it will assist in lowering the utility bill and keeping the heating system running properly.  Also, filters that are filthy and have blockage may cause the furnace to work improperly and cause carbon monoxide leaks (CO), which can be very dangerous to those inside the home.

Because of these facts, it is important that disposable filters be changed regularly. Depending on the type and brand, manufacturers may recommend a different schedule for changing. Be sure to read the instruction manual that came with your filters, and change them at least three times a month (and perhaps once every month). However, even if you do have the high-efficiency filters which only need to be changed once every three months, make a habit of checking them monthly. If they are dark and clogged, change them right away. Owners of houses that have pets, smokers or other dirt-causing habits may need to change their filters more often than is required in other homes with few people or without as much action stirring up dirt and dust.

For some people with homes that do not create or stir as much dirt and dust, the reusable filters which can be vacuumed or otherwise cleaned will work fine in protecting the furnace and cleaning the air. Still be sure to check these furnace filters monthly and clean them when needed.

Despite the particular furnace filter that you choose to purchase and use, always make sure to check it regularly for noticeable dirt and read the manufacturer’s recommendation for cleaning. Then clean or replace the filter at least as often as the manufacturer suggests and possibly more often, if you notice that the filter is getting dirty.
