» Purchasing a Dust Mite Cover
Depending on the type of dust mite cover you wish to purchase, you can find them at local discount stores or at retail suppliers specializing in allergy relief products. They range in price from $30-$300+ depending on the type and quality of cover you decide to purchase.
There are several things to look for when purchasing a dust mite cover.
· It should completely enclose the mattress, pillow, etc.
· It should be comfortable to sleep on. The fabric should be soft and not make noise when you turn over in bed.
· It should be tough. Non-woven fabric may tear.
· It should be permeable to water vapor.
· It should be safe for infants and children- preventing any possibility of suffocation.
· It should be dust-proof-preventing dust mites from crawling in or out of your bed.
There are several different types of dust mite covers to choose from. You should choose the one that best meets your needs based on the price and the quality of the cover. Most dust mite covers will fall into one of the following categories:
- Polyurethane-coated cloth: There are several brands of this type available all which vary in price, softness, and vapor permeability. These covers are washable, durable, and have stitched, airtight seams. They typically have a woven cloth on one side and a plastic surface on the other side. These covers have proven to be very effective in reducing dust mite allergens.
- Very tightly woven cloth: This type is also available in several different brands and is known for its softness and exceptional vapor permeability. They are extremely durable and usually have an extremely fine woven pattern on both sides. They may prove to be more comfortable than the polyurethane-coated cloth. This type of cover has also proven to very effective.
- Non-woven fabric: These covers are made out of plastic fibers and appear paper-like. They are much less expensive than the polyurethane-coated covers, but they will not last as long. Depending on the manufacturer, they may need to be replaced as early as every six months. They are a more cost-effective option, but may not be as effective for people with severe dust mite allergies.
- Polythene Sheet: This type of cover is very inexpensive, but is usually of very poor quality. It is not very durable and is not vapor-permeable. These covers are not recommended for use with infants and children.
