» Taking Care of Mirrors
In order to protect the mirrors in your home and help them maintain their beauty and good condition, it is important to prevent them from being improperly handled, stored, or cleaned which can result in damages or quick deterioration of mirror surfaces.
Mirror manufacturers offer guidance and instructions for taking care of their products. Here are some of the most common guidelines for handling mirrors.
- Receiving and Storing
Because mirrors are glass and very fragile, they should be handled as little as possible and always with care. When a mirror is delivered, check it immediately for any damages. It should then be unpacked as soon as possible. Mirrors are not meant to be stored for long periods of time; however, if storage is necessary, it should be done properly and never for more than six months. They should always be stored vertically – never lying flat! – on a soft surface if possible. The storage area should be dry and well ventilated. Also, try to protect the mirrors from any objects that may possibly fall.
- Installation
Proper installation of any mirror is essential to its final look and safety. When installing mirrors, be sure to follow these guidelines:
o Prepare the location before beginning the installation process.
o No not install mirrors on new areas of the wall; this includes plaster, paint, and masonry.
o Always use gloves when handling mirrors. With this safety precaution, cuts and chemical damages can be easily prevented.
o Use only mirrors that are specifically deigned for the outdoors when attempting to install mirrors outside.
o Give mirrors sufficient air space from the wall for the backing to receive ventilation.
o Use only the recommended materials and tools when installing mirrors. If the mirror is a wall hanging, be sure that the anchors being used are strong enough to hold the weight of the mirror.
o Don’t allow the edges of the mirror to contact or sit in water as it will damage the mirror backing.
o Be very careful around the edges of the mirror, which are the most vulnerable part and can also be very sharp.
o Be careful to prevent nails, screwdrivers, and all other sharp objects from touching the back of the mirror. If the backing is scratched, it will show through to the front of the mirror.
- Care and Cleaning
Mirrors are very simple and inexpensive to clean and maintain if done correctly. While there are many commercial cleaners available for the glass, the best cleaner is a soft lint-free cloth and clean, warm water. If another cleaner is used, make sure that it does not have ammonia or vinegar in it. Apply the water to the soft cloth and gently wipe the mirror surface, being careful not to get the sides or back wet. Dry immediately. Be extremely careful when dealing with the mirrors not to harm the mirror edges, which are the most vulnerable part, even by getting water on them.
- Safety Tips
If mirrors are properly installed, they will not pose unneeded threats. However, if they are being stored, make sure that people are not working or playing around them. Never run around mirrors or allow someone to be in a position where they may fall into the mirror. If the glass does crack, have it fixed or replaced immediately. Sharp glass is a danger to everyone! Make sure that no extra weight is placed upon the mirror, and properly remove and dispose of the mirror if you ever want to get rid of it. These precautions will ensure that the mirrors in your home will be sources of beauty and serenity rather than worry.
