Should I Buy Old or New or Just Build My Own?

  • Antique Clocks - One of the biggest differences between an antique clock and a modern clock, as far as appearance goes, is the case of the clock. On an antique clock the door basically runs the full distance between the hood and the base. Because of this, the antiques clocks generally appear taller than the more modern clocks.  This is because many of the newer clocks have been fitted with a shorter door that is accented with a flat, curved, or pointed top.  Because these clocks are old it is usually very difficult to find the parts needed for repair.  Older clocks were not generally mass produced and there is a bigger chance of purchasing an original time piece.  One fundamental point that should be made about these clocks is that they are almost always weight driven.  Key driven clocks didn't come along until recent years.
  • Modern Clocks - You can find a modern clock that is of heirloom quality, and they are easier to maintain.  These cousins can usually be found at a cheaper price, or for a little extra money you can get one that is custom made.  There is also a much wider variety if you decide to purchase a new clock.  The options range anywhere from a very traditional clock to a hard line contemporary clock, and everything else in between.
Do it Yourself Kits - The most obvious reason to build your own grandfather clock is the feeling of great accomplishment you will have every time you look at it.  Your loved ones will probably feel much the same way. Of course, the price of the kits doesn't hurt this argument too much either.  You can find kits as low as $50, with just the basics, or as high as $3,000 if you want to go all out.
