A transcriptionist needs a good computer with current software, high speed internet connectivity, earphones and a foot-controlled start and stop device and quite a number of reference books pertaining to the transcription, such as: medical terminology, medications, abbreviations, diagnostic and laboratory terminology, surgical terms and so forth. There are also books available according to specialty. Besides purchasing books, transcriptionists can purchase CDs with the same sort of information, medical spellchecker and other typing software that can make transcription faster. Some transcribers who do not use voice files received from the internet may use something called a C-phone, which is a special phone that receives digital files over the phone. They can record these dictations on a re-recorder for transcription at a later time. All of this equipment can be purchased online or in electronics stores such as Radio Shack. The internet is a great resource for the medical transcriptionist who needs to find a correct spelling. There are a number of websites devoted to aiding transcriptionists in their work.
