Unfortunately, medical coding and billing can be an area where a medical clinic or office can overstate claims in an effort to generate more income. It seems that those who attempt this are more likely to try to bilk the government out of money instead of private companies, because the government seems to have less resources to investigate fraudulent claims. But, those working for Medicare and Medicaid who are receiving the claims do pay attention: if two medical practices in one area see similar patient loads but one practice is getting reimbursed tens of thousands of dollars more than the other, an investigation may be ordered. If a physician or clinic is caught, re-payment is demanded or in more serious cases, jail time is given to the offenders. Fortunately in medical clinics, there are systems of checks and balances to help combat both intentional and unintentional over-billing. And because so much is at stake for the physician, he or she generally tries to operate under the system with honesty and integrity.
