According to the Federal Trade Commission, there are a huge number of fraudulent companies that claim quick and easy profits by starting your own medical billing service. Here’s what usually happens: ads are placed online and in newspapers claiming very nice incomes, such as $20-$40 dollars an hour while working at home as medical billing service provider. For around a $400 fee, the company will send out software for medical billing that’s usually outdated, a supposed list of area physicians interested in obtaining a medical billing business contract (usually bogus), and a form letter or some sort of “how-to-get-started” guide. The catch is this: these fraudulent companies claim to give you your money back if you are not satisfied. Most of the time, they do not reimburse you. So, the person trying to start a home-based business has information that is not accurate or helpful and is out $400. The FTC is trying to crack down on these businesses, but it seems that when one company goes out of business, another one is ready to take its place. The rule of thumb with this sort of thing is to be very wary of claims of easy wealth with little effort. In reality, starting a medical billing business is very hard work and takes a long time to establish. Think about it: no physician is going to hand the financial aspect of his practice to just any person on the street!
