Locum Tenens is a person who works temporarily in the place of another person. This practice is most common among medical doctors. According to the website, www.locumtenens.com, the practice evolved in the 1970’s in Utah out of the need to staff physicians in rural areas. In other words, the doctors did not want to move permanently to these rural areas, but were willing to work for short periods of time with a good salary guarantee. This program was originally funded out of a federal grant through the University of Utah. However, it was so successful that other areas wanted similar programs. A new industry has developed where companies recruit physicians to work in a location temporarily. It has become an alternative way for physicians to practice medicine (often in understaffed areas) as opposed to being a means by which governments try to alleviate the problem of understaffing of medical services in rural areas.
