For the physician, he or she must be careful to work with a reputable company and make sure issues like medical malpractice insurance and benefits are taken in consideration, especially if the locum tenens assignment is a year or more in duration. The hospital or clinic hiring a locum tenens must also be careful to work with a reputable recruiting company that will carefully screen their physicians. No clinic wants to hire a doctor who is simply jumping from one place of employment to another because of a reputation for poor patient care or poor interpersonal skills. As far as the patient is concerned, medical practices, clinics and hospitals must make sure that there are no “lapses” in the patient care as more than one physician may be considered the primary doctor in a specific case if a locum tenens has been used during the duration of the patient’s care. The patient, too, needs a sense of continuity in his or her own care. Lots of different doctors with different opinions and different information could be very unhelpful in the healing process!
