Healthcare information technology is an exploding field. It seems medical personnel and information technology gurus are continuously joining forces to create or recreate medical systems of collecting and relaying health information and putting these systems in a user-friendly software format, and in the end, making the information vastly more reliable, accurate, easy to access and easy to transfer to others involved in patient care or research. In the realm of healthcare information technology, there are different venues. One is the business aspect of efficient billing and coding so that the clinics receive the maximum reimbursements from insurance companies for all the costs incurred in patient care. Another aspect of HIT is the managerial aspect where patient and staff scheduling is achieved by the aid of software and not luck of the draw. Management also includes supply chains, use of equipment and not to mention, individuals who teach and train others in the clinic or healthcare system how to use the HIT system. A final aspect of Healthcare information technology—the part that is given the most attention—is the emergence of electronic medical records. This is where the shift from paper to paperless is most vividly seen. The doctor does not open a stuffed and aging manila folder anymore: he turns on his or her laptop, types in a security code and accesses all he needs to know about you with a click.
