Non-Clinical Services

Generally speaking, the overall purpose of healthcare facilities management companies is to take care of all the non-clinical (healthcare-related) services. It is obvious that a nurse wouldn’t clean the hospital floors but it may not be so obvious that the nurse would not be the one to transport a non-critical patient down the hall in a wheelchair! Healthcare facilities management companies provide patient transportation services so that the healthcare providers can stay focused on patient care. Some companies boast of elaborate tracking systems so that when Patient Smith is being taken down the elevator to the imaging center for an MRI, this information is available because his whereabouts are being electronically tracked in the hospital.

Food services are a large part of the healthcare facilities management business. This part of the industry is undergoing enormous change and growth. Previously, one might visit the hospital cafeteria and have a small selection of food choices. Today, the consumer has demanded a lot greater choice in more restaurant-styled settings. Healthcare facilities management companies can create their own unique food specialties to offer, such as soup and sandwich shops or pizzerias, or they can bring outside companies into the hospital environment. Don’t be surprised to find a Starbucks Café in a hospital in Bangkok or a McDonald’s in the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. The opportunity for choice is also a growing trend for patients as they receive their meals in the hospital room. Some companies have systems where the patient can order food to his or her liking using a touch-screen system from the hospital bed! Of course, the medical staff has influence on patients who are recovering from surgery or need to follow careful diets to insure good health and healing. But the idea is that the “meal of the day” trend is dying out in some hospitals and meal choice is “in.” Healthcare facilities management companies are eager to meet this demand.
