Today’s hospital is a little world in itself: The overall goal is quality healthcare for the patients, but thousands of little components make this overall goal possible. The casual observer sees shiny floors, clean restaurants with good food, smiling individuals transporting patients down the hall, a comfortable temperature and fully functioning medical equipment and not have any idea all of the logistical and managerial decisions that are made every day to keep the facility operating smoothly. One might guess that a very stressed out individual – maybe the hospital CEO or equivalent—is sitting in the hospital tower making all of the decisions, hit or miss. Perhaps this is true in some cases, but the art and science of healthcare facilities management is an ever-growing industry with many quality companies that hospital CEOs and governing boards eagerly employ to handle the day to day operational concerns of their facilities. These companies provide a wide-range of services, but an the overall trend is 1) to provide a clean, safe and comfortable environment; 2) to provide non-clinical services to the patients, such as food services and even transportation within the facility; 3) to keep the thousands of pieces of equipment updated, maintained and repaired in a timely fashion, and finally, 4) to make sure all of these systems coordinate together in an efficient manner.
