Preparing your loved one for the idea of moving to assisted living can often times be met with resistance. Have the conversation with them long before the need arrives. Look for opportunities that arise around life events, such as drafting a will, changing insurance policies, going on Medicare and social security, or advanced health care directions.

Understand that it is normal for your loved ones to show resistance the first time you bring up the subject of assisted living and do not be discouraged. They most often do not feel that they need help and do not want to feel as if they have lost control over their own lives. Assure your loved one that you are looking out for their best interest and do not pressure them. Give them a little time to adjust to the idea before approaching the topic again.

Involve your loved one in the decision making process. Take them to visit the facilities you are considering and make sure they feel comfortable in the residence. Show them the units where the residents live and the facilities where they meet for social activities. Be positive and upbeat but also be sure that you are listening to the wants and needs of your loved one. Be respectful of the feelings they are experiencing and how difficult this change may be for them. Acknowledge their right to help in making the decisions.

Be aware that the day they move into the assisted living facility will be filled with mixed emotions. Try to make the decorating and settling-in process a positive and fun experience. However, you must be sensitive to the fact that your loved one may be feeling anxious and experiencing a feeling of loss in giving up their independence. It will take a while for them to settle into a daily routine and become comfortable in their new surroundings.

Be patient and loving with your loved one during this transition period. Let them know you love them and are there to listen and are trying to provide them with the best care possible.
