What is a yo-yo?

The yo-yo is one of the most recognized toys in America and around the world. The basic yo-yo is made of a cotton string and two small disks (usually made of plastic, wood, or a metal such as aluminum) that are connected by an axel. Let go of the yo-yo and it slowly drops toward the ground; a slight movement of your wrist and it comes right back to you.

The string connects the yo-yo to the yo-yoer’s finger. One end of the string has been tied into a slipknot, which slips over the yo-yoer’s finger. The other end of the string loops around the axle so that the yo-yo can continue spinning (sleeping) until you pull it back up.

Yo-yos are just children’s toys, but at the same time, they are serious business and a competitive and collective hobby for all ages. Clubs such as the American Yo-Yo Association connect yo-yo enthusiasts, and national and international contests help determine the best yo-yoers. You can even do some light reading on the subject; “Yo-Yo Times” and “Fiend Magazine” are published periodically, while Lucky’s Collectors’ Guide to 20th Century Yo-Yos helps yo-yo collectors, and The Yonomicon investigates the science principles at work in the yo-yo.
