Paintball, like any activity people may participate in, has its dangers. Interestingly, though, it has fewer injuries among American players than most other sports. A few rules must be adhered to, and the game is much safer for all involved. The rules are basically common sense rules and are not different than regular gun safety rules. First, each player must always have safety goggles and a mask in place during gameplay. Second, a player's gun must not shoot paintballs at a speed faster than 300 feet per second. And, third, that barrel plugs always be in place when a player is not in the playing area. Barrel plugs are simple pieces which go in the end of the gun's barrel to keep the gun from firing accidentally at an inopportune time and in an unexpected direction.
In the event a player's goggles come off during gameplay, that player is to immediately lie face down wherever he is, protecting his eyes from potential damage. If someone sees another player in this prostrate position, he should immediately call for a cease fire so the player can safely get outside the playing area. Occasionally a player's goggles will get fogged up or covered with paint, in which case the player should yell "Fogged!" At this time another player or a referee should stop play and assist that player in reaching the safe area as well.
All in all, simple common sense and caution will make for a safe and enjoyable paintball game for all.
