You must first determine whether you are going to work as a full or part-time freelance writer. This will be determined by the number of hours per week you can allot to your writing schedule. Determine what other activities take place during a normal week. Be sure to include all household tasks that you perform on a daily or weekly basis, cooking, laundry, cleaning, running errands, and getting the kids to school and their activities. You may find during this process that you are spending time in areas that you could eliminate. Your time may be better spent elsewhere. After determining your regular activities that must be performed in addition to your writing, determine whether this leaves you with time to write on a full or part-time basis. If working full time, allot 40 hours throughout the week to your writing projects. Determine what part of the day is best to write and when you should fulfill your normal obligations. For instance, if you are not a morning person, writing may be best left until the afternoon, allowing you to spend the morning getting your housework and errands completed.
It may be helpful for you to use a calendar to plot out a writing schedule. Jot down any out of the ordinary activities on your calendar, normal daily activities, and a time slot for writing. If you want to only work Monday through Friday, determine the number of hours you must work during those days to be able to have the weekends free. If you let interruptions throw you off schedule you will end up having to make up that time during the weekends.
Most writers feel that it is important to write a little each day. You must determine what is right for you and your family. You will hopefully find that a routine created to fit your schedule will quickly become a habit.
