There are a few books that every good writer needs to have available on their bookshelf.
• Dictionary – Spell check is a wonderful tool but you still need a dictionary to check the definition of words. This is a book you will use quite often, so get the best one you can afford.
• Thesaurus – To keep from using the same words repeatedly, a good Thesaurus will come in handy. The Synonym Finder by Rodale is a highly recommended book that can be bought in paperback. This is also a feature on most word processing software packages.
• Stylebook – The Chicago Manual of Style and Strunk & White’s Elements of Style are both highly recommended stylebooks for help with punctuation, grammar, formatting, and much more.
• The Writer’s Market – Published by Writer’s Digest Books, this is one of the most used books by freelance writers. This publication describes markets for your articles, books, plays, and greeting cards. The Writer’s Market is an annual publication which includes all of the publishers that are accepting submissions, the names and addresses of the editors, word requirements, how many submissions they accept each year, what they pay, and tips on the type of submissions they are publishing.
