If you ask an American to describe a French person, you might receive negative adjectives such as “rude” and “self-centered,” or positive ones such as “chic” and “sophisticated.” Most of our collective opinions of the French people have been formulated from movies and short visits to Europe, and both are inadequate to truthfully portray the nation’s way of life. The truth is, most of the French don’t really care what Americans think. And that is what makes them so distinctively French.
