Unfortunately World War I was to follow in 1914. After the war, France was devastated with poverty and the government’s weakened state allowed Hitler’s armies to march down the Champs-Elysees and take over in 1940. The Nazis occupied the north portion of France, though they established a puppet French government. On June 6, 1944, the largest armada in history landed on the beaches of Normandy, leading to the defeating of the Nazis and the end of World War II.
Since World War II, France has faced challenges with once formerly profitable colonies such as Algeria, but has largely remained peaceful and profitable. It continues to be a major tourist destination, with its capitol Paris as one of the world’s most glamorous and exciting cities.
