Today we will take a day trip to historic city of St. Augustine, FL. St. Augustine is only a 30 minute drive from Jacksonville. Let’s visit the following sites today to explore the history of the settlement of Florida:
Ft. Caroline National Memorial – stop by this site on your way out of Jacksonville. This park memorializes the effort of France in the 16th century to establish a permanent colony in Florida. You will find a near full-scale rendering of the fort, a nature trail and a visitor center. This is where Jacksonville had its beginnings.
Castillo de San Marcos – St. Augustine – The castillo was built in 1672-1695 and is the oldest masonry (coquina) fort in the United States. It is considered the best preserved example of a Spanish colonial fortification in the continental United States.
Fort Matanzas National Monument – St. Augustine - Fort Matanzas was built by the Spanish in 1740-42 to protect the “back door” into the city. It is a masonry (coquina) watchtower found on Matanzas Inlet, fourteen miles south of St. Augustine.
Old Florida Museum – St. Augustine - This museum holds many everyday objects of the people who originally settled this area of Florida. Here you will find games, weapons, foods and tools from the early settlers.
