As we have noted, the explosion of the Internet has made fantasy sports extremely popular. Millions of Americans spend gargantuan amounts of money each year to participate in fantasy sports, while even more millions play the free versions of the different games. Fantasy sports have made regular sports far more popular than they have ever been. Many people credit the great home run chase of 1998 between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa as the event that brought baseball’s fans back after the strike of 1994, but it is not coincidental that this is the same time that fantasy sports were really coming into prominence. People who once were marginal, fairly uninterested fans now follow more closely to see how the players on their fantasy team are performing. People who were already dedicated fans follow the game even more closely than they used to, because now they can’t just follow their favorite team…They have to see what the players on their fantasy team are doing!
