The following are helpful tips to keep in mind when considering an aquatic fitness routine:

• Consult with your physician before beginning a program.
• Even if you are an experienced swimmer, you should never exercise alone in the water.
• The water depth should be around your chest level. Shallow water allows for more strain on your joints while water too deep can cause you to lose your balance.
• Touch the heal of your foot to the floor each time your foot lands on the bottom of the pool to support a correct form.
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your workout.
• Swimsuit – Select a swimsuit that allows for freedom during movement. Choose a swimsuit that also provides support. You may be allowed to wear shorts over your swimsuit depending on the facilities rules.
• Swim caps may be used to keep your hair out of your face and to keep your hair from being damaged by the chemicals in the water.
• Aqua Shoes – For traction and stability in the water you will need to wear a pair of aqua shoes, which can normally be found in any sporting good store.
• Goggles may be used to protect your eyes from the chemicals and bacteria found in the water.
• Do not jump into the water without being certain of the depth. Jumping into water that is too shallow can cause serious injury.
• Non-swimmers can safely participate in aquatic fitness programs.
• The YMCA is a good place to find aquatic fitness programs. You may have to pay a membership fee at any fitness center to be able to take an aquatic class.
• If you are taking an aquatic class for physical therapy or rehabilitation, check with your health insurance company to see if the expense is covered under your plan.
• To determine whether you are working out too hard, take the talk test. You should be able to easily talk to another person while performing your aquatic routine. Water exercise should not be that exerting or ever be painful.
• Make the experience a fun one in addition to being beneficial to your health. Vary your routine, add music, exercise with people you enjoy, and have a great time.
