If you are interested in beginning an exercise program but cannot afford to spend money on aerobic exercise equipment or do not have room in your home for a large piece of equipment, videos are a great way to get started. These days it seems as if every celebrity has an exercise video out; teaching everything from power step routines, iron pumping, kickboxing, tai chi, yoga and Pilates. There is something on video for everyone’s fitness level.

The videos generally cost between $10.00 and $25.00 with the biggest advantage being that they can be done from the comfort of your home. Another advantage to working out to a video rather than in an exercise class is that when you fall behind you can simply rewind and try it again. However, one of the disadvantages to exercising via video is that there is no instructor to alert you when you are not doing the exercise correctly. Bad form can result in injury and/or an ineffective workout. Watch the video carefully from beginning to end to be sure you are imitating the instructor precisely.

When selecting a video, keep in mind that for a well rounded fitness program you need cardiovascular training, strength training, and flexibility training. When talking about videos, cardiovascular usually means step aerobics, floor aerobics, kickboxing, and dance type workouts. There are a variety of strength training videos, such as Pilates, yoga, balance ball, dumb bells, and videos using rubber bands for resistance. While most videos have a stretching segment at the beginning and end of the video, it is often not enough. There are many good yoga, and Pilate videos which focus on core strength and flexibility.

Choose two or three videos when beginning a routine that offer variety. Boredom keeps a person from staying with an exercise routine.
