Other than free weights, exercise bikes are the most often purchased piece of exercise equipment each year. They offer a non-impact cardiovascular workout. The exercise bike is a wonderful piece of equipment for an overweight or sedentary person who is new to exercising. Generally, exercise bikes take up about ten square feet in your home. Most high caliber bikes run in price from $500.00 to $1000.00.

The two main types of exercise bikes are the stationary or upright and the recumbent.
• Uprights – The upright bike looks like a regular road bike. They primarily work the leg and buttock muscles through the pedaling motion. Upright bikes allow for more movement during use, such as riding while standing.
o To use correctly, adjust the seat so that your knees are just slightly bent when the pedal is at the lowest point. Hold the handle bar grips but do not clench them. Sit upright without hunching your shoulders forward.
• Recumbent – When using a recumbent cycle, you are seated on a backrest with your legs out in front. Recumbent cycles use the gluteus, quadriceps, and hamstring muscles. They give more support to your lower back minimizing the stress on your knees that you have with an upright bike. Recumbent cycles are favored for being more comfortable than the upright and for being easier to use. The exercise routine with a recumbent is generally a slower, less intense workout. The recumbent cycle is more expensive than the upright.
