Elliptical machines are cross-trainers that give a combination of several workouts. Most models replicate walking, stair stepping, bicycling, and skiing with an elliptical motion. Elliptical machines are good for people who want a low impact exercise program. They offer a variety for people who are easily bored with exercising. Generally, the elliptical machine gives you a cardiovascular and full body workout while burning a lot of calories in a short amount of time. Manufactures claim that you can burn over 700 calories an hour using their machine.
There are many makes and models available in elliptical machines. They run in price from $300.00 up to $5,000.00, dependant on their quality and features offered.
To use the elliptical machine you stand on pedals, which move on an elliptical track, usually by rollers. Look for the following when purchasing an elliptical machine:
• The machine should be stable with a fluid and quiet motion. The elliptical should not feel jerky which can be a problem with some of the less expensive models.
• Get a pedal with a comfortable, non-slip design.
• The handlebars should be ergonomically correct for your posture and so that you do not bump into them while exercising. If the handlebars move, they should do so easily.
• Be sure that the resistance is easily adjustable.
• The display should be easily read and contain all pertinent information. Most models display the speed, time, and distance but high-end models may also display the calories, incline, and heart rate.
• Measure your space at home and the machine to be sure it is the right size. There are machines that fold and roll on wheels for storage.
