Take a break. This could be as simple as taking a walk outside…closing your office door and enjoying a few moments of solitude…or simply taking a deep breath. Also, schedule regular vacations throughout the year. You must be purposeful about this. Put it on the calendar months in advance so that nothing can intrude. Not only does this give you something to look forward to, but you’ll be amazed at how your mindset changes after a few days away.

Separate your workspace from your living space if you work out of your home. When you’re done working, turn off the light and maybe even close the door. Avoid the temptation to take work out of your office area to other parts of your home.

Prioritize and segment your projects. Create a timeline and establish short-term and long-term goals for each one.

Keep your mind in the present. Life gets out of balance when people live passively rather than actively.

Say no. If you already have enough plates spinning, don’t add another.

Spend time on yourself. Develop a hobby, jog, read a book.

Learn the red flags of being out of balance: exhaustion, irritability, obsessing over one area of your life more than others.

Finally, make a list of at least three or four occasions when you felt out of control, missed a deadline or became very stressed. Beside each one, thoughtfully write down the one thing you could have done that would have made the biggest difference. Be very honest with yourself and focus on what was within your control – not what other people could have done. Then apply that principle to the next stressful situation in your life or work.
