The country of Ecuador is divided into four regions, three of which are contiguous, and one of which is in the center of the Pacific Ocean. The costa region is made up of the lower altitude regions in the west part of the country. It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean. The sierra region in made up of mountains and higher altitude areas in the central part of the country. The oriente is the Amazon rainforest located in the eastern part of the country. The Galapagos Islands, located some 600 miles west of the mainland in the Pacific, are the country’s final region.
