Will I need to schedule my cruise activities in advance?

While there may be a few exceptions, such as a choice as to whether you will sit alone or in a dinner group for the entirety of the trip, most cruise activities can be planned or chosen on the spur of the moment or very soon before. If you usually like to lie out by the pool and read but one morning decide that you’re ready to try something else, you can spontaneously go to a dance class or to see a movie. This is one of the advantages of taking a cruise. The activities are set up so that, for the most part, they do not have to be scheduled in advance and thus can cater to your vacation lifestyle.

When you arrive on a ship and probably every morning, you will be given a ship newsletter which outlines the day’s activities. Even if you are going to play it by ear regarding what you do and when, it is a good idea to take a look at this itinerary and decide if there is anything you would like to plan on doing. This way, you don’t miss out on specific times of availability. Some people even like to do a little noncommittal self-scheduling. Just to get an idea of when to plan to come back from the gym, they check the availabilities for the spa and the chess tournaments. This sort of planning is primarily stress-free and enables you to be either unstructured, if you so desire, or carefully planned.

Many people are also concerned about whether or not they have to schedule shore excursions when they are first planning their cruise. No – you don’t. Most cruises offer the activities right up to the departure time. Or, you may choose to exit the boat and purchase the activities or tours from someone not affiliated with your cruise. This, although not as certain, can often save money.
