Philadelphia expects to break records this year for the number of cruises sailing from its Navy Yard terminal, prompting port officials to seek out larger facilities to handle the traffic.
About 130,000 people are expected to pass through the Philadelphia terminal located on South Broad St. as they arrive or leave on the 40+ cruises during the main season (April 25th - October 28th).
26 of the voyages will be on board one ship - Royal Caribbean Cruise's Empress of the Sea, marking the first major line to be based in Philadelphia for an entire season. Similarly, a Norwegian Cruise ship is set to sail nine times in the season, and several others will make port calls once a day.
Philadelphia isn't typically a city you expect to have a crowded port, nor a popular venue for cruise ships to take off from. But seeing as larger facilities are in the works, in may very well be from now on.
