Cruising to Nainamo

The Nanaimo Port Authority hopes to build on last summer's small successes with the cruise ship tourism industry.

The cruise season gets into high gear May 27, when Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas becomes the first of five full-size cruise ships to sail into Nanaimo harbour.

And if 2006 is anything like 2005, the number of ships will rise before summer ends.

"Last year we started with three [coming] and ended up with seven," says Port Authority president Bill Mills. "We hope there will be a few more added, like last year."

Nanaimo has already welcomed three so-called pocket cruise ships - smaller vessels which typically carry 100 or fewer passengers.
