» What to Look for in a Minicomputer
The basic operations or what distinguishes a minicomputer or mid-range server is the way it processes applications, and the operating system that is used. Here are some things to look for when you are thinking about investing in minicomputers or mid-range servers:
· CPU (processor): Most minicomputers use an IBM Power5+ processor with 64-bit processor technology.
· Memory: Most minicomputers use up to 32GB of memory in order to handle the many programs that can run at the same time. However, there are systems that can go as high as 2TB.
· Hard Drive: The hard drive is usually pretty big. It’s not uncommon to find hard drives with sizes in the range of 39TBs up to 381TBs.
· Tape Drives: You’ll find many minicomputers will come with tape drives included. They may come with a capacity of up to 30GB.
· Communications: Minicomputers usually contain two Ethernet LAN and a 2-line WAN for communication purposes. Being it is a server, minicomputers must provide a way for more than one network connection and they do.
· Software: UNIX as the primary operating system. It’s faster and more stable than any other operating system and can handle multiple processes while other operating systems can’t claim this feature.
