There is always a concern when people are getting involved on campus that they will become so involved that their grades will be affected negatively. And this concern is valid. Dorm life, for example, can be so exciting that at late hours of the night, students are – instead of studying – running from room to room socializing. However, as with any other necessary discipline in life, your suffering GPA cannot be blamed on the thrilling qualities of campus life.

Being involved on campus is about more than just meeting people; it’s about developing emotionally, physically, mentally, and – yes – socially, while you develop academically. The goal of most colleges is not to make you scholarly and then send you on your merry way; it’s to cultivate holistic growth and train you for life. So don’t refuse to get involved in things on campus in fear that you won’t be learning as much as you can; there is much to be learned from campus involvement too.

However, you also should not let campus involvement become an excuse for you. Balance is a necessity in life, and college is the perfect opportunity to learn and practice it. Don’t join every campus group; pick one or a few that are most important to you. And if the residence hall is too loud at night, study at the library.
