Choosing a major is a task that many college students stress over, some even to the point of dropping out because they can’t decide. Yes, choosing a major is a big deal as it relates to your future career goals; it should not just be jumped into without any thought. However, it is not a life or death decision, and with careful consideration, the choice can be made without a nervous breakdown.
Sometimes, the major that you decide upon is directly related to the field of work that you will later be able to become involved in. Doctors have to start out pre-med. It’s just the way the system works. However, others degrees like English can prepare people to become grant-writers, teachers, customer service representatives, writers, and much more. The common perception that your major will determine your career is often incorrect. Many jobs will consider people with a variety of degrees; and many other jobs just care about the degree itself, not the particular major.
If you are considering a certain major, but are unsure as to whether or not it will be what you expect, you can relax in knowing that most schools offer the opportunity to change your major. So you can feel safe knowing that if you declare a major and then find yourself hating it, you can get out of it with just a few signatures. If you have done your research and are all but certain regarding what you want to major in, consider taking a few sample courses in that major. Talk to people who are in that major and who have graduated with that degree, and see how it went for them. If you feel fairly confident about it, go ahead and declare your major. If you get further along and find that it is not for you, you can then evaluate whether you want to just finish it out and take the degree or change it and begin some other coursework.
