» Should I choose a college or university that's close to home?
There is a big debate among many parents, students, professors, and the peanut gallery as to whether going to a college close to home is the “right” thing to do. Optimists cite benefits like “It’s less of a difficult adjustment” while pessimists claim “You won’t become independent!” Really, the issue of whether or not you should choose a college or university that’s close to home is entirely based on your personality and preference. If you think you can do it and want to, go for it! If you would really like to get away and start your own life – nothing wrong with that either. If you do decide to stay in the same town, there are some important steps you should take to make the change from high school to college.
• Try to create new friendships rather than just secluding yourself to all of the old ones.
• Discuss expectations with your family that still lives in the town.
• Seriously think about moving either onto the campus or into a place of your own to start building independence.
• Offer to show others who are new around your favorite hang-out spots, helping them adjust and giving you a new perspective.
• Consider offering your home to those who cannot fly home for the holidays.
