Practice makes perfect with this sport, and the supervision of an experienced climber is necessary. It may take several winters before you are sufficiently trained. Here are some basic steps to getting started:
• Work on your fundamental rock climbing skills. Practice the basic movements of climbing at an indoor climbing facility or outdoors on rock.
• Hire an instructor to teach you the fundamentals of ice climbing. It is important you do this before you purchase gear. Instructors possess tools and crampons for you to test before you buy the equipment yourself.
• Be certain you enjoy climbing the cold ice rather than a warm rock in the sun. You do not want to invest your money into a sport you do not really enjoy.
• Make sure you have time off in the winters, or you may not be able to travel to any major ice climbing destinations to truly invest in the sport.
