The Shanghai People

Shanghai natives tend to view themselves as more worldly and sophisticated than citizens in other parts of China. The cosmopolitan lifestyle and western influence is unusual in other portions of the nation, and those living in Shanghai pride themselves on their receptivity to all that is new and modern. There is some measure of discrimination in the city between natives and those who have entered the city from the rest of China.

Developments such as the Xin Tiandi (New Heaven and Earth) and the Shanghai Centre are multi-million dollar complexes full of western-style shops, restaurants, bars, and boutiques. In other parts of China, these establishments would fail miserably, due to the residents’ inherent distaste for American commercialism. In Shanghai, however, they flourish. The people, particularly the younger ones, are increasingly embracing the western style life as their own.
