This immense military blockade was built over several centuries, primarily to ward off the invading Mongolians. The Badaling section lies about 50 miles northwest of Beijing, and a trip to see it should be high on the list of every visitor to the city. It is the most popular section, so if you would prefer to avoid the crowds, consider trekking to less populous sections such as Jin Shan Ling or Simatai.
