Santiago is the capital of Chile and the fifth largest city in South America. It is located in the country’s central valley, and administratively is a section of the Santiago Metropolitan Region. The city continues to grow, as it lies on an inland plain, with the Andes sparkling in the distance. It is one of the most modern cities to date on the continent, where nearly 5 million people reside.

Santiago is the most integral industrial and financial center of Chile. But not only of Chile, Santiago is also one of the biggest financial centers of South America. There are some international institutions, such as ECLAC, and multinational companies, such as JP Morgan and Coca-Cola, who have their offices located in Santiago and even their headquarters in the region.

Not only is Santiago Chile’s center of commerce, but it is also a central region filled with activities and wonderful sites. Visitors can ski only 60 km away at the primary South American ski centers, or relax on the breathtaking beaches of the Pacific, which are only an hour’s drive away to the northwest. South of Santiago rests one of the world’s most renowned wine producing regions, the Maipo Valley.

The focal point of Santiago is the Plaza de Armas, which rests along the Alameda, five blocks south of the river. The city’s European heritage is displayed in the Parque Forestral, which was designed by a French landscaper. Here walkers can stroll down tree-lined paths along the Mapocho. The Mercado Central evidences British design, with its wrought-iron ceiling parts that were imported from England. Today shoppers can visit the market and buy fresh, exotic produce.
